MATERIAL HEALING: KATARRA LARAE PETERSON + FISCHER CHERRY
SPRING/BREAK Art Show NYC
SEPTEMBER 8 - 13, 2021
In this installation, two vibrant artists explore material culture and delve into subject matter immensely relevant to the experience of womxnhood, with the knowledge that this experience itself has traditionally been excluded from the art historical canon. Like the layers of meaning they seek to uncover and celebrate, their work is borne of meditative and organic processes such as gathering and weaving— those often relegated to the diminished notion of craft. Through bold material transformation, the works reclaim both physical and spiritual power by subverting notions of history, sculpture, color theory, landscape painting, and/or abstraction. In doing so, these artists actively practice a blatant rejection of the norms and hegemonic forces that categorize certain materials or beings as lesser; and unhinge the notion that certain lived experiences are meant to remain silent. Human realities such as trauma, grief, exclusion, or otherness become Renaissance-like catalysts for the creation of potent objects meant to both heal and shift internal—and by extension—external power.
